Mountain pacas like this one @parquejaimeduque are found in the mountain ranges of Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, and Venezuela. They spend the day in underground burrows they dig along river banks, but at night, they will come out of hiding to feed on fruits, nuts and seeds, storing all in their large cheek pouches. Should they run into trouble while foraging, the strong-swimming creature will use the water to escape danger. #paca #mountainpaca #spotted #cute #nocturnal #burrow #PhotoArk #savetogether Mountain pacas like this one @parquejaimeduque are found in the mountain ranges of Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, and Venezuela. Meet one of the smallest crocodile species in the world - the West African dwarf crocodile. This species, found in western and central Africa, inhabits small rivers and pools in forests and swampy regions. A nocturnal species, these crocs will spend the day resting in the water, coming to life at night in order to hunt prey. They have a varied diet, feeding on everything from birds and small mammals to millipedes and beetle larvae. When swimming, this species can use its tail to propel its body vertically out of the water in order to ambush prey resting on overhanging tree branches. They are also known to regularly venture out of the water onto land, practicing what is referred to has “high walking”. We’re celebrating #WorldBeeDay by taking an up close look at a carpenter bee I encountered in Mozambique. Named for their habit of nesting in wood, they are solitary (unlike honeybees or bumblebees), large and loud, but males lack stingers and the risk of being stung by a female is small as long as you aren't trying to handle them. #buzz, #sting, #Carpenterbee #bee #WorldBeeDay #fuzzy #big #blackandyellow #wings #PhotoArk #savetogether We’re celebrating #WorldBeeDay by taking an up close look at a carpenter bee I encountered in Mozambique. Common scoters like this male at the Monticello Center in Italy are a species of diving duck found mainly on open salt water, rarely coming inland. Much of a typical day will be spent feeding, which scoters do in small groups. The birds will dive down beneath the surface to retrieve some of their favorite foods - mollusks, crabs, and small fish. Often referred to as aoudad, Barbary sheep are a species native to North Africa that are closely related to the domestic sheep and goat. Some research suggests that this species may have actually been one of the first livestock animals used in North Africa, as evidence dating back to the Holocene epoch has been uncovered that indicates the presence of human-controlled herds. Today, while protected across much of its home range, the Barbary sheep finds itself competing with domestic livestock for resources, and populations face additional pressures from hunters. While hunting is restricted or banned in many areas, enforcement can be difficult and poaching persists as a threat to the 5,000 - 10,000 Barbary sheep that remain in the wild. To combat these challenges, plans for several reintroduction programs overseen by zoos and universities are underway which could help to increase the wild population in the future. Known by most and feared by many is the black widow spider. In North America, northern and southern black widow spiders are occasionally found in the same geographic region, but can usually be distinguished from one another by the type of hourglass marking displayed on the underside of their abdomen. For the northern black widow the hourglass is distinct, but is broken. Southern black widow spiders, like the one pictured here, have a complete hourglass and sometimes sport a row of red spots down the middle of their backs. The southern black widow is primarily found in the southeastern United States, ranging as far north as Ohio and as far west as Texas. To feed, black widows will puncture insects with their fangs and administer digestive enzymes into their body. These enzymes help to liquify the prey’s body, which the spider can then easily suck up and digest. This spider is venomous and can harm people, however they inject such a small dose of venom that it rarely causes death. Black widows are not an aggressive species, and bites are usually the result of the spider becoming trapped or pressed against human skin which triggers a defensive reaction. When working in areas where widow spiders may be established make sure to take proper precautions such as wearing gloves to lessen your chance of an unwanted encounter. Trapped during a bioblitz in Mozambique, these natal multimammate mice almost appear to be plotting their escape. Two of them had, in fact, disappeared into tall grass right before a photograph could be taken. A couple of local kids ran into the field and came back with the mice in hand just a few moments later, and with the group reunited, I was able to get this shot. A bioblitz is an event that focuses on finding and identifying as many species as possible in a specific area over a short period of time, and may involve the help of community members as well as scientists. This species has a large population that is widely distributed and occurs in a number of protected areas. Because of this, and its tolerance for habitat modification, natal multimammate mice are considered to be doing well in the wild. #mice #multimammate #natal #rodent #cute #plotting #bioblitz #PhotoArk #savetogether Trapped during a bioblitz in Mozambique, these natal multimammate mice almost appear to be plotting their escape. Meet Sara, an endangered whooping crane at the @auduboninstitute Center for Research of Endangered Species. This species saw its numbers drop to just 15 birds in the early 1940s. Decades later, this number has climbed to over 800 captive and wild birds thanks to captive breeding efforts, land protection, and public education. The only remaining self-sustaining population of whooping cranes is the naturally occurring flock that breeds in Canada and winters in Texas. On their wintering grounds along the Gulf Coast of Texas, these birds feed almost exclusively on blue crabs. The coastal marshes provide excellent habitat for the crabs if salinity levels remain moderate, but when freshwater is reduced, fewer crabs are available for whooping cranes, threatening the survival of this delicate population. In an attempt to alleviate this threat, @savingcranes works with diverse partners in Texas to protect the coastal ecosystem, its wildlife, and the vital coastal economy. #Sara #whoopingcrane #crane #bird #endangeredspecies #PhotoArk #savetogether Meet Sara, an endangered whooping crane at the @auduboninstitute Center for Research of Endangered Species. An Ural owl inspects its surroundings during a photo shoot at the Monticello Center in Italy. Named for the Ural Mountains of Russia where the first specimen was collected, these owls are threatened by humans eliminating the hollow trees they nest in, but will successfully use nest boxes to raise their young. This video was taken thanks to the support of @greenteenteam. #owl #ural #nocturnal #bird #PhotoArk #savetogether An Ural owl inspects its surroundings during a photo shoot at the Monticello Center in Italy. With its piercing yellow eyes, the face of this Indochinese southern terrapin is not an easy one to forget. But over the last 75 years, several subpopulations of this critically endangered species have gone extinct, and those remaining have experienced major declines. The greatest threat to this species is exploitation for its meat and eggs. In an effort to protect this species, international trade has been banned and an action plan has been created. A spiderman agama shows off its striking coloration during a photoshoot @houstonzoo. This species earned its name because of its resemblance to Spiderman’s suit, with its head, neck, and shoulders colored bright red or violet, while the rest of its body is a deep shade of blue. Only males sport this impressive color combination, and are capable of changing colors in certain situations, while females remain a dull brown. There are more than 60 species of agama that are native to Africa, Europe and Asia. Most of these species live in mountains, rocky steppes and arid areas. That being said, these lizards are quite adaptable, and many have learned to live in both urban and rural areas. Because of their vibrant appearance, many people keep agamas as pets, which can have a negative impact on wild populations over time. Remember, when looking for your next pet that wild animals are best suited for life in the wild - consider adopting from your local animal shelter instead of shopping for a pet. #agama #lizard #spiderman #colorful #striking #vibrant #reptile #PhotoArk #savetogether A spiderman agama shows off its striking coloration during a photoshoot @houstonzoo. This vibrant beauty is a twospined angelfish @pureaquariums. Also known as the coral beauty, this secretive species is found in tropical marine waters of the Indo-West and Central Pacific Oceans. If you can spot them, these fish are most commonly found in lagoons near coral reefs, usually inhabiting areas on the outer slopes. #angelfish #twospined #coralbeauty #colorful #fish #vibrant #PhotoArk #savetogether This vibrant beauty is a twospined angelfish @pureaquariums.
