Sharks are a lifelong passion and one of my favorite photographic subjects, so I am excited to announce that I will be returning to the @saveourseasfoundation as its Director of Storytelling. My work as a National Geographic Photographer and NGS Explorer/Fellow will continue unchanged alongside this new role. Over the years I have been fortunate enough to mentor many talented photographers and as Director of Storytelling I will be able to continue this on a larger and more impactful scale. My key goal is to create new and exciting opportunities for emerging ocean storytellers, building on from the very popular Marine Conservation Photography Grants that we ran in 2014 and 2016. We want to continue to support the next generation of photographers and visual artists passionate about marine conservation and storytelling. The Save our Seas Foundation already has a stellar reputation for funding the most innovative shark and ray science, and my goal is to weave in equal levels of excellence in conservation storytelling. Follow @saveourseasfoundation and watch this space for more details. To celebrate #worldturtleday I want to share some of my favorite sea turtle images with you all. Photographs that I shot for @NatGeo over the last decade on Masirah Island (Oman), Europa Atoll (Moz Channel), Crab Island (Australia), Aldabra Atoll (Seychelles) and the Exumas (Bahamas). @esooman @saveourseasfoundation @sif_seychelles @fonassociation #apudthamarangers #seaturtles #turtles To celebrate #worldturtleday I want to share some of my favorite sea turtle images with you all. ANIMALS BEING CRAP AT SOCIAL DISTANCING Part 6 // Cape Gannets on their nests at Bird Island in South Africa’s Algoa Bay. These large majestic seabirds congregate beak to tail at densities of up to five nests per square meter. That special night a thunderstorm raged past the island and I was able to make a long exposure illuminated by four different sources: lightning, the lighthouse, a flash and my flashlight. #southafrica #animalsbeingcrapatsocialdistancing #socialdistancing #seabirds #lightning ANIMALS BEING CRAP AT SOCIAL DISTANCING Part 6 // Cape Gannets on their nests at Bird Island in South Africa’s Algoa Bay. When I am away on assignment for @NatGeo one of our dogs usually takes over my side of the bed. It looks like Blue has NOT gotten the memo that I will be home for the foreseeable future!!! ANIMALS BEING CRAP AT SOCIAL DISTANCING Part 7// At Ostional along the Pacific coast of Costa Rica up to 500,000 Olive ridley turtles emerge to lay their eggs during this multi day phenomenon. Synchronized nesting in such large numbers not only overwhelms predators of adult turtles (Jaguars and Puma’s) but more importantly it results in the much more vulnerable, diminutive hatchlings to all emerge from nests en masse around similar times. Vultures, raccoons and stray dogs still get a fair share, but with the sheer number of hatchlings on the beach at any one time they barely make a dent in the population. Open up and say Ahh! In the Gulf of Tadjoura off the coast of the small African nation of Djibouti, sub-adult whale sharks gather in large numbers every winter. Together they feast on prolific plankton blooms induced by oceanographic upwelling, spurned on by fierce desert winds. ...and now for something a little different! A Indian Ocean selfie with a feeding whale shark from a very long time ago! For someone who has been on the road/in the field almost nonstop for the last 15 years, finally being at home for an extended period of time is equal measures terrifying and cathartic all at the same time. Stay safe everyone !!! ...and now for something a little different! A Indian Ocean selfie with a feeding whale shark from a very long time ago! I don’t convert many of my color photographs into black & white, but every once in a while I make a image that screams to be seen in its most basic, monochromatic form. This sextuplet of Galapagos marine iguanas basks on lava rock to rewarm their bodies after grazing seaweeds in the cold Pacific Ocean. A gray whale mother surfaces to breathe, her calf floating just out of frame. The water in Baja California's San Ignacio lagoon is usually a murky green and photographing the gray whales that come here to mate and give birth, underwater is usually very tricky. I spent almost a month working this lagoon for the 2017 @natgeo magazine story ‘Baja’s Ocean Stewards’ and only for a short, but very memorable 45 minutes I hit the jackpot. The tide pushed in beautiful clear blue water and I had more curious whales around the boat then I knew what to do with. @maresmexicanos. #Baja #mexico #whales #conservation A gray whale mother surfaces to breathe, her calf floating just out of frame. A rare encounter with pilot whales in the pelagic realm far offshore from Cape Town. This pod was surprisingly inquisitive and they stayed around for more than 10 minutes. One of the females had a young calf swimming beside her and was especially curious. The big males can be up to 7m (21 feet) and can be a bit intimidating. #southafrica #whales A rare encounter with pilot whales in the pelagic realm far offshore from Cape Town. Turn the sound on for this one :-) Before the Covid lockdown a baboon helped himself to the last of our apples growing around the @thomaspeschak studio in the mountains outside of Cape Town. This male Chacma baboon rarely spends time with the rest of the troop and for him social distancing pays off by getting all the apples for himself.
