Explore the world’s wildlife with me as I shoot for NatGeo, BBC, and Netflix, and now in my backyard. New Book available now: New Guinea >>
|From the archives, here’s a little glimpse into the glamour of wildlife photography… getting caught in a sudden downpour in Thailand while building a canopy platform to film hornbills near a fruiting fig tree. Why didn’t I go down? I decided to wait it out so I could finish the platform and blind and be ready to film there the next morning. In the video you also see another canopy resident waiting out a rain shower on another day. It’s a female Helmeted Hornbill in her nest cavity. See my recent posts @TimLaman to learn more about Helmeted Hornbills. Swipe to see a couple of other hornbill species I eventually got from this platform: Photos 2) Rhinoceros Hornbill tossing back a fig, 3) Great Hornbill scratching its face, 4) Selfie in the final blind. #TL_WildlifePhotoTips #wildlifephotography #rain #shotonRED @RedDigitalCinema #hornbill||2020/05/24 22:37:00||65,749||961|

|Have you seen “Dancing with the Birds” on Netflix? I’m excited to share that this film (which I worked on filming with a great team from Silverback films) recently won the “Best Animal Behavior” Film at the International Wildlife Film Festival! It also is listed right now on the Apple News feed as one of the top 17 documentaries to watch on Netflix! Swipe to see the trailer. Enjoy on Netflix anytime you need a little avian entertainment. You might be be a little impressed with the efforts male birds go through to dazzle their partners, and who knows, maybe demand a little more effort from yours? #birdsofparadise #dancingwiththebirds||2020/05/12 11:15:12||34,686||711|

|Photos by @TimLaman. Bluebirds are a favorite of many, and seem to be a bringer of happiness, so I hope these shots will brighten your day. I had another fun morning photographing my local Eastern Bluebirds. Both the male (shot 1) and the female (shot 2) are busy delivering food to the chicks. Yesterday, I mostly saw small caterpillars. Today, bigger prey like spiders (shot 3) and grasshoppers. The kids must be growing fast. When they arrived at the same time, they would take turns going in (shot 4). To get shots like this without disturbing nesting birds, it’s critical to use a blind and keep your distance. I use the excellent ones with photographer specific features from @TragopanBlinds (shot 5). It’s also a very safe, socially isolated way to spend your mornings! #bluebird #photographyblinds #TL_WildlifePhotoTips @GitzoInspires #FramedonGitzo #massachusetts||2020/05/08 05:27:43||26,595||225|
|Photos by @TimLaman. From Pygmy Possums (1) to Tree Kangaroos (2), from Berrypeckers (3) to Bowerbirds (4), and from Lianas (5) to Tree Ferns (6), the great island of New Guinea is a place if fascinating and unique biological diversity, and of great importance for global conservation as the largest remaining rainforest region in the entire Asia-Pacific realm. These are a few images from my new book New Guinea: the Nature and Culture of Earth’s Grandest Island (by Bruce Beehler, with photos by Tim Laman). Published yesterday by Princeton University Press, and available on my website (www.timlamanfineart.com or link in bio). Please check it out and considering bundling it with one of my other books (such as Birds-of-Paradise, or Hornbills) and save on shipping. #NewGuinea||2020/05/21 07:25:42||23,200||145|
|Helmeted Hornbills are Critically Endangered due to hunting for making silly decorations out of their heads. Today is Endangered Species day, so I’d like to promote more awareness about this spectacular and under-appreciated bird that I have spent a lot of time documenting. The short film I made with Cornell Lab of Ornithology has won “Best Wildlife Conservation Film” at the recent International Wildlife Film Festival, and you can view it on the Cornell Lab youtube channel. Just google “Hunting Helmeted Hornbills” or check the link in my bio today to view it and please help spread the word about this bird. The key to saving them from extinction is to stop the demand for their heads in the markets of China and some other SE Asian countries. Swipe to see a short video clip of the male delivering wild figs to a female in their nest cavity.

|Photos by @TimLaman. Today May 15 is Endangered Species day, and I’d like to share some favorite photos of Bornean Orangutans from my archive to promote awareness of this Critically Endangered species. Orangutans are endangered mainly due to habitat loss, which has been severe over recent decades. But important strongholds remain, like Gunung Palung National Park, where I took these images. And there is important conservation work being done there by @SaveWildOrangutans, who work closely with the communities around the park to promote the long term health of this important orangutan population and the sustainable livelihoods of the people in the communities. Please follow @SaveWildOrangutans to learn more, and follow the link in their profile to their website and consider a small monthly donation that can really make a difference. I’m supporting this effort and I hope you will join me at www.savewildorangutans.org. Photos: 1) Female with baby 2) Young female 3) Adult male making kiss-squeak call.

|“Hope in Rubber Boots”.
Hi everyone, please check out the new short film produced by my friends at Gunung Palung National Park in Indonesia by checking their feed @tanagupa. It’s in Indonesian, but even if you don’t speak the language, you will appreciate the visuals. Gunung Palung is a place where an international team of Indonesian and foreign researchers have been collaborating to study Indonesia’s amazing biodiversity for over twenty years. The title character, Lande, has worked at this field camp since 1994. That’s why the film is called “Lande, Hope in Rubber Boots”. @ayoketamannasional_official @tanagupa #gunungpalungnationalpark #Indonesia.
